Ceratotherium simum. In 1967, one adult female with a calf and 2 immature bulls were introduced from Umfolozi and confined in a fenced paddock. One bull was gored to death by the female, and the other bull died apparently from snakebite. The remaining two animals escaped to a neighbouring ranch and were darted for translocation to Wankie NP, but the calf died from drug overdose. None present in 1976.
In 1972, 10 (5/5) introduced from Umfolozi. In 1974 four (2/2) were added from Inhlaba. One bull was shot by a hunter on safari. Three calves have been born. The herd is expected to increase and bulls will be offered to hunting clients.
Ceratotherium simum. In 1974, eight (4/4) animals introduced from Umfolozi. One adult male escaped to Wankie, 2 adult females died, apparently as a result of external abscesses developing septicaemia. One calf produced died soon after birth. Total in 1976: 5 animals. - Lion Ranch, Near Wankie NP
All indications are that before 1900 the white rhino was widesprad in Rhodesia. But after 1880 numbers began to decline rapidly owing to the increase of commercial hunting for the horn. Coryndon felt that by 1892 it was virtually extinct and Lang gave the last authentic record in Rhodesia as 1895.
Operation Rhino was mounted in 1962 and 8 animals were translocated from Umfolozi to Rhodesia, 4 each to Kyle and Matopos NP.
Ceratotherium simum. In 1974, 8 (4/4) introduced from Umfolozi. Three broke horns in transit and died after an insecticide had been used to kill parasites on the stumps. One calf has been born, another is expected. - Iwaba Ranch, Between Gwelo and Harare
Ceratotherium simum. In 1972, 4 (2/2) introduced from Umfolozi. They have produced 3 calves. One was gored to death by a bull and another died of unknown causes. Third is doing well, another is expected. - Good Luck Ranch, Near Wankie NP
Ceratotherium simum. In 1974, 5 (2/3) introduced from Umfolozi. Two immediately went to neighbouring farms where they have been sighted. One death has occurred. As there are only 2 female sleft, the owner has applied for a bull from Natal. - Mkwasine Ranch, In South East Zimbabwe
Ceratotherium simum. In April 1975, 10 animals were introduced, 5 (1/4) from Kyle and 5 (2/3) from Matopos. They showed a wide dispersal pattern with a tendency to form small groups of 2-3 animals, four of which moved into the Wankie NP, where they have been sighted in the Robins and Sinamatella areas. Total in 1976: 10 (3/7).
Ceratotherium simum. 33 animals were introduced from Umfolozi: 1962 four (2/2) - 1965 six (1/5) - 1966 23 (11/12). However, Natal Parks Board numbers show 27 destined for Kyle. There are 14 recorded deaths. Soon after release a number of animals died from accidents indicating unfamiliarity with their new environment. In 1968 five died during a cold snap when bad frosts follwoing a drought severely depleted availibility of food. Births number 22 with 3 deaths. Two animals were moved to McIlwaine and 5 to Matetsi. Total in 1976: 34.

Between November 1966 and March 1967, 35 (15/20) animals were released in Wankie and immediately dispersed throughout the park. At least 6 moved into Botswana, two of them travelling 140 miles from release point to Makgadikwe Pan where they died of thirst. Three animals were shot, one by a farmer, one by a poacher and one by a guerilla. One was killed by a train, one was found stuck in the mud, and five others died from unknown causes. One was killed accidently in an attempt to dart it and move it back into the park. A census in 1971 estimated about 32 in the park, including numerous calves and sub-adults. In 1975 the estimated number in the park was about 40.
Ceratotherium simum. The original introduction of 3 animals in 1967 comprised one mature female with a female calf and one immature bull. The calf lost condition and died the same year. The bull was still immature, no calves were produced. In 1972, an adult bull and mature cow were introduced from Kyle, resulting in the birth of 2 calves. The animals are in excellent condition and a steady increase can be expected. Total 1976 is 6 animals.
