Statement by Govt. Assam: In 1902 the necessity for protecting the rhinoceros in Assam, became apparent. The rules regulating hunting and shooting in reserved forests were amplified on the lines of those in force in the Central Provinces. The whole year was then prescribed as a close season in reserved forests for the female rhinoceros when accompanied by her calf.
