The objective of this thesis has been to analyse the figure of the unicorn in Western Christian Europe between the XI, XII and XIII centuries from the location and understanding of the elements that established their leterary and visual expression in the different contexts in those who projected this animal. To carry out this study I have taken all the written testimonies concerning this animal, entering both previous and contemporary authors, as well as various literary natures; and of course, I have researched into the aesthetic representations of the animal, previous and contemporary. For this work I have needed to avail myself of different methodologies. Essential, have been the steps of the sociology, because thanks to it I have been able to evaluate the social, cultural and religious context linked to our object of study, I have also used a Psychological methodology due to the need to deepen the symbolism of the unicorn within specific contexts. This has helped me to reflect on the conception and value of the different figures of the animal depending on the context that projected. In addition, in order to carry out this research, I have had to analyze different primary and secondary sources, as well as to managing a complex and extensive bibliography.
