Jean Etienne Liotard (1702-1780). Miniature of Archduke Karl Joseph (1745-1761), second son of Empress Maria Theresa and Francis I of Lorraine. Oval, 5.5 x 6.5 cm. The boy is reading a book entitled “Le Rhinoceros” on the left page abd a picture of the animal on the right page. Made in Vienna around 1747 after the exhibition of the Dutch Rhinoceros Clara, which the royal family visited on Saturday 5 November 1746 (see Rookmaaker 1998, p.64). Miniature is attributed to the school of Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1780). From Clarke, 1986, pl. 5 and p.182
