The engravings by De Sève after the drawing by Oudry were published in the Histoire Naturelle by G.L. Leclerc de Buffon. The chapter on the rhinoceros in this multi-volume work was published from 1764, in various formats (quarto, octavo, duodecimo). There were later additions to the text. The Histoire Naturelle was regularly reprinted, edited, and also translated – well into the 19th century and even later. Here we will restrict to editions published before 1799, at the end of the eighteenth century.

The African two-horned rhinoceros in this Strasbourg set (no. 221) is similar to the rhinoceros of R.J. Gordon which was added in supplementary material to the Histoire Naturelle. Pasteur writes about Clara:

In the year 1749, a one-horned rhinoceros was also transported around Europe; this animal was very tame, and it was this one that was weighed and found to weigh five thousand pounds; he ate sixty pounds of hay and twenty pounds of bread and drank fourteen buckets of water every day; he also loved beer and wine and patiently allowed the smoke of tobacco to be blown into his nose and mouth; otherwise, he was very gluttonous; once, in the vessel in which he was being transported, a boy was standing somewhat close to him when he snatched his hat from his head and, before it could be taken off again, devoured it in an instant; he was very tame and also very swift, in proportion to his size and his clumsy appearance.
