According to Kautilya's Arthashastra [ed. Sham Sastry, p.100, Mysore 1924] in the reign of Maurya - BC 321 - the duties of the Forest Superintendent included collection of the skins of dead animals from the forrests. The list includes ... khadga = rhinoceros.
