The Rhino Awareness Expedition began in December 1993 when Klaus Schrumpf and Pamela Bell left Cape Town and their specially designed 4x4 Landcruiser was shipped to Chile where they began their trip. The objective was to create a worldwide awareness of the plight of rhino and the senseless killing of these animals. After 4 years in Latin America, they have arrived in USA. They intend to take a total of 12 years for their journey.
Mount Etjo Safari lodge. The reserve is one of a number that are custodian reserves of black rhino, from the subspecies bicornis. There was a 3 year old hand-raised black rhino `Nossi' who had been born in the bomas at Etosha. Her mother went to a private sanctuary in South Africa. It is ultimately hoped to release Nossi in the main sanctuary.

Levels of rhino poaching have declined, due to (1) market has sufficient horn to meet the demands, (2) rhinoceros are fewer and better protected. All government funding for rhino conservation is on the decrease. Mount Etjo Safari lodge is owned by Jan and Annette Oelofse, former Natal Parks Board employee.
