African Rhinos
Four black rhino were moved from a fenced sanctuary to unfenced wilderness. Five black rhino were born during the last 18 months. Mama Safi gave birth to the 21 st calf in May 1999. We had a serious threat of poaching. At least 3 rhinos were killed on other ranches in the Laikipia area. Two new males were brought from Nairobi NP. Four males bred here were sent to the great expanse of Tsavo. White rhino population increased from 4 to 6. One female had her first baby, a male that is being mother-raised. In addition, a 2 year old female was brought from Solio Ranch in a work-for-rhino exchange. Mweiga joins our 3-year old hand-raised male Rafiki to form a second breeding group.
