Survey on 26 April 1966, only 32 were counted. The day was very warm and most rhino were observed in or near wallows or streams.During seven days in the field prior to survey, I observed a total of 46 rhinos: 2 non-sexed, 12 ad.males, 21 ad.females, 11 young. I feel certain that there are at least 50 rhino

1941, Although the area presently occupied by the sanctuary was unofficially recognized by 1936, it was not until 13 March 1941 that it was set aside as a sanctuary: Government Order No. 10549, later amended by Notification No. 5238 on 3 April 1943. First known as a game sanctuary, later as a wild life sanctuary.
1932, The Rhinoceros Preservation Act came into being and the Jaldapara Game Sanctuary, in the Duars, was declared a special reserve for the preservation of the rhinoceros.
1966, No evidence of rhino poaching observed
Jaldapara range covers 25.833 acres, 40.36 sq.miles. This includes the 1243 acre Salkumar block, part of which is cultivated lands and the forests are commercially exploited. Sanctuary proper is 24,590 acres or 38.42 sq.miles.
