Itala Nature reserve was proclaimed in 1973 with an area of 8094 ha, and subsequently enlarged through the acquisition of additional farmland to its present size of 26305 ha. Of the 34 animals, 11 were born in the reserve, whereas the original 23 were reintroduced from Ndumu, Umfolozi and Vernon Crooks nature reserves since October 1974.
