The Chobe Wildlife Trust and Rhino & Elephant Foundation are currently involved in evaluating the tentative establishment of a black rhino sanctuary in the Serowe area of central Botswana. On weekend of 14-15 Sep. 1991, Peter Hitchins of REF, Peter Joffe of Endangered Wildlife Trust and Grahame Thomson of the Chobe Wildlife Trust undertook a ground and aerial survey of the proposed area. Also involved were local members of the Kalahari Conservation Society and Serowe residents. The evaluation was positive, although it was felt that the area should be considerably enlarged.
It is now about 12 months since 5 black rhino were translocated to Lapalala in Aug. 1990. On 3 July 1991 in the western sector, the carcass of the black rhino female `iGoli' was found. Now remain 2 bulls and 2 cows. They all had been in holding pens for 15 ? weeks. One female `Punyane' is seen on regular basis by staff and guests at Kolobe lodge.
1991, two chobiensis black rhinos were recently captured in the Caprivi Strip and these are presently being held in an undisclosed location in Namibia.
Close contact is maintained with Mr John Brooker, who has a bull and a cow of the subspecies michaeli.
