Mr Hazewinkel gives a horn length of 37 cm and size of the base of 22 cm x 15 cm. Maybe could this be a misprint, the horn being 27 cm rather than 37 cm? His measurements differ considerably from those which we took of the old male of Tasikmalaja.

Old male shot at Tasikmalaja, Java in 1934 Horn length 215 mm, but it must be observed that the tip of the horn was abraded, which means that the real length of the horn of this old male must have been at least 250 mm. Circumference of the horn at base was 565 mm, the diameter of the oval base 210 x 130 mm,

Old male shot at Tasikmalaja, Java in 1934. Total weight was 2280 kg. In this case all parts of the meat and skeleton, as well as the sexual parts, were weighed with a transportable scale. The total weight of the skin was calculated in pikols (10 coolies were needed for the picoling of the skin, 1 pikol is 60 kg, total therefore 600 kg.) For blood and other fluids like stomach content it was taken as 150 kg. The heart was 5 ? kg Liver 18 kg Spleen 3 ? kg Genital parts 5 ? kg Skull including brains and horn, 38 kg. Weight of fresh horn was 986 grams, of dried horn 847 grams.

We know very little about the age of the rhinoceros. In Brehm it is recorded that an Indian rhinoceros in Barrackpore, calcutta was 45 years old and that other zoos had the same experience. If one adds a few years before the animal arrived in captivity, it is clear that the longevity can be up to 50-55 years. In any case one can assume that the rhinoceros in nature, where it can live undisturbed, in general will reach a much higher age.

Lydekker in Brehm states that R. sondaicus, if not smaller, certainly is lighter built than R. unicornis. It seems that very old examples of R. sondaicus are not much smaller than unicornis, although it is known from other large mammals like elephant, banteng and tiger that those from the Indian archipelago are larger than those in the Indo-Australian archipelago.
