Report on survey of the Sumatran rhinoceros in Mid-Sumatra

Note
Location Sumatra Subject Distribution Species Sumatran Rhino (sumatrensis)

Survey of Sumatran Rhino in Central Sumatra near Pekanbaru. This is the area where the specimens for Basel and Copenhagen Zoos were captured, I had hoped to obtain some positive information but at the end of the month, I had collected a lot of negative information. I must state that I can make no estimate of the possible number of rhinos in the area covered, but there were no indications that this species is either plentiful or presently existing in its former habitats. From Buatan, 7 hours down the Siak River (Standard vacuum oil co.) And then to Kerintji, 17 miles to south. Then south to Ukui. The guide was somewhat at a loss when we found that most of the former rhino habitat, which he had known, had been completely denuded of forest and although we looked over the entire neighbourhood, we found no sign of rhino.
