The Nepalese authorities have claimed success in the conservation of the one-horned rhino, which is believed to be one of the world's most endangered species. Numbers are reported to have increased by more than 25 per cent in the past 6 years. The latest census puts the number of one-horned rhinos in Nepal to more than 600. According to the Director-General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Nepal, the transfer of rhinos from an over-populated park in southern Nepal to another in the west helped to increase numbers.
