The park consists of flat to slightly rolling plateau country, mainly in the drainage of the upper Dwangwa River, with many scattered hills. Main vegetation is miombo woodland.
Today found in the Kasungu NP. Jachman estimated about 10-20.

Rhino were in the past found virtually throughout Malawi except for the montane areas. They occurred among the foothills of the Nyika plateau, but were never recorded on the plateau proper. Today found in the Kasungu NP and the Mwabvi GR.

Rookmaaker 1983: 40 places Kirby's (1920) Manza in Malawi but it is in fact in Mozambique south of the Zambezi River.
The reserve is in broken hilly country in the drainage of the upper Thangadzi River. The vegetation consists of mopane (Colophospermum mopane) and other woodlands.
