The young Swiss biologist Markus Borner has been a year in Gunung Leuser and made several expeditions, 600 km on foot, 300 km in a canoe, 2000 km by car and 1260 km by plane or helicopter. The most important rhino areas can be reached on foot or by helicopter. The local hunters only know the areas along the border, and 80% of the reserve remained unknown. There is a central valley in the reserve, where there is a good population of Sumatran rhino. In the Kompas area in the south-east of Leuser tracks of rhino were found. No hunting or poaching has been noticed during the past three years.
