In 1599, a mission of Portuguese Jesuit priests traveled to the kingdom of Maharaja Pratapaditya (1561-1611), who had his capital in the Jessore region. Melchior Fonseca reported that even then deer and monkeys were retreating away from civilised areas, but the forests still had some rhinoceros, but he had no chance to see them
