As most rhinos in captivity, Subur comes to the bars around the enclosure and made whistling noises.

In the outside enclosure, Subur had two places where she sprayed urine in a strong flow. She sprayed up to 6 metres far and to a height of 2 metres. She usually walked around when spraying, but I have seen her urinate also while standing in the wallow.

Then in 1959 two animals, both females, were brought from Sumatra to Europe. On 2 July 1959 'Bettina' arrived in Basel, and five months later 'Subur' came to Copenhagen. As Bettina, who has been sick from the start, died after two years in September 1961, Suber is now the only example of her species outside her homeland.

When I saw Subur on 28 and 30 May, and on 1 and 3 June 1961, she was about three years old, in good health. Although this is the smallest species of rhinoceros, it makes quite an impression with a shoulder height of about 1.20 m. When she raises her head, she makes an even more compact impression.
