There has been hunting of rhinos in Atjeh, Djambi and Palembang, where the horn could be sold to Singapore, and also in the Lampongs and South Benkoelen, where Chinese from Batavia financed the hunt.
The following rhino wallows were reported. In subdivision Seloema. A location for rhinos was given as the Boekit Tjampang, which is connected to the Goenoeng Dempo, but no particulars could be obtained. The pasirah of Ngalam said that he went hunting, many years ago, together with a certain Bansariwas, but without result, starting from Pagar Alam (Palembang) and that they found a wallow with a diameter of 30 vadem on the slopes of the Boekit Dingin, on the border of Palembang and Benkoelen.

The following rhino wallows were reported. In subdivision Lebong. In the area between this resort and the residencies of Palembang and Djambi. These reports were given by a man called Sitar, living in the Doesoen Tapoes, in the vicinity of the pasanggrahan Rimbo Pengadang. All wallows are on the slopes of mountains, i.e. Boekit Roentjing 5, Boekit Reges 2, Boekit Pandan 7, Goenoeng Baroe 5, Oeloe Air Soeloep 1 (I have been unable to locate this last place on the map).
Although the protective legislation has reduced the constant persecution, maybe this is due to a smaller number and the reduced value of the horn.
The rhinoceros is practically exterminated in large parts of Sumatra, certainly the one-horned species and the few remaining animals have retreated to remote and inhospitable regions. None of our reporters could estimate the number of rhinos, but all agreed that very few were left. It can be taken to be correct that in South Sumatra only few tens are left, and the question is if the number is not already below the minimum to guarantee the continued existence of the species.
The reports about the rhinoceros in the entire western part of Sumnatra are very scarce, which I attribute to the fact that there has been little hunting of these animals in these parts, even before. It is certian that there are now only very few people who have hunted the rhino and that the interest in game is slight.
I was told that rhinos were seen in the source area of the Way Roe and the Way Baroe (marga Bengkoenat) and that they descended from the mountains to lower areas during diminishing and new moon.

The following rhino wallows were reported. In Sumatra's Westcoast. Between 1927 and 1930, I heard that in a large village situated on the west bank of the Lake Singkarak, near Panindjawan, a rhinoceros passed through the village at night to drink from the lake. When one realises that near this lake the dense forests of the inaccessible Boekit Barisan start, this can be understood.
The rhinos have retreated to remote areas like the Boekit Barisan mountains. They were also observed in the Boekit Barisan mountain chain, near Way Pintau (marga Bengkoenat) and the Way Mendati (marga Ngamboer).
The presence of rhinos in a certain area is assessed according the number of used wallows called 'koebangan badak' by the locals. Every wallow is surrounded by a certain area where the rhino roams and which it does not leave. Sometimes one animal, or a pair, uses several 'koebangans', also called 'soeban', at the same time.
