Rookmaaker (1977) estimated the total number survving as low as 25 animals. Even after more detailed surveys in 1993, Yayasan Mitra Rhino in Indonesia still estimated the total number in Sabah and Sarawak as about 85. For Kalimantan, only a vague `a few' could be provided. This last estimate indicates the total lack of knowledge of the present conservation status of rhino in Kalimantan. In 1994 a survey was initiated to investigate the range of the orang utan, funded by WWF in the Netherlands. The map indicates recent rhino sightings in Kalimantan, based on information from the local population. All sightings were made between 1985 and 1995.
