Correspondence: A rhinoceros
To the Editor of the Lahore Chronicle.
Sir. – For some time past the community of Lahore have been gratified with the sight of a large Rhinoceros fastened to a tree on the side of the road near the Post Office. I believe this animal was brought from Bombay by an Arab merchant for sale here, but has been attached, together with a huge elephant and some horses, for debt. As these animals will be disposed of in a few days by auction to defray the debt, I would recommend the authorities to purchase the Rhinoceros for the purpose of having it placed in the Soldier’s Garden, where already a menagerie (in its embryo yet) is in existence. A Rhinoceros would be no unworthy addition to the noble Tiger there. Yours fathfully “---”

Local Intelligence.
In our last a correspondent suggested that the Government athorities should take the opportunity, offered by the sale of a Rhinoceros, now at Lahore, to purchase it for the menagerie in the Soldier’s Garden. We believe the statement of our Correspondent, that the animal, with some others, were attached for debt, was correct, but the seal has since been taken off, and it is uncertain whether anu public sale will take place.

Correspondence: The rhinoceros again
To the Editor of the Lahore Chronicle.
Sir. – In your issue of the 21st instant, I observe a correspondent’s communication regarding a Rhinoceros which is liable to censure and requiring correction. He says “the community of Lahore have been gratified with the sight of a large Rhinoceros”. Perhaps he is not aware that during the reign of our Maharajah of blessed memory all sorts of animals from different countries were kept for show at Lahore. The other day a large Rhinoceros, belonging to His Highness Maharajah Dulleeen Singh, died in the city; your correspondent may rest assured, that the inhabitants of Lahore have been fully gratified with the sight of all sorts of animals procurable in India. Your correspondent labours under another error, viz. “ – that the animal was brought from Bombay by an Arab merchant for sale here.” The animal in question was exchanged at Lahore by the merchant alluded to, for some Arab horses from a certain Davie Singh, who bought him somewhere in the Punjab, for the purpose of presenting it for sale to Maharajah Goalab Singh., but that wily old chief took good care of his purse, and declined to purchase it. I agree with your correspondent so far, that it will be a good thing for exhibition in the Soldiers Garden, and a great curiosity to European Soldiers and their families. As the Soldiers Gardens is a great amuseument to the community at large at Lahore, it would be well if the distinguished protector of tem could add some wild animals, birds, and other curiosities. At presen there is nothing particularly worth attention in them. The introduction of a canal of water, and fountains containing rare and remarkable fishes, would materially contribute to the attractions of the place. Yours obediently – A Punjabee.
