Black rhinos established in Rhodesian reserve

During 1970 and 1971, a total of 81 black rhinos were drugged with darts and then transported by truck over 1000 km to the Gona re Zhou reserve in the south of Rhodesia. The project was aided by World Wildlife Fund. The majority of the rhino have not ventured further than 16-18 km from the release point. Excellent sightings have been noted of family groups. Six animals are known to have died shortly after translocation, but 7 births have been recorded and it is believed that other births have taken place.
