Six black rhino were translocated from the Umfolozi Game Reserve to Andries Vosloo Game Reserve near Grahamstown on 6 October 1989. The animals, three cows and three bulls aged between three and four years, were donated to the Andries Vosloo Game Reserve by the Natal Parks Board as part of a national strategy to conserve black rhinoceros. Four black rhino were relocated to the Andries Vosloo Reserve, ideal black rhino habitat, three years ago with another five due to arrive next year followed bv a further ten in 1991. According to Mr Peter Burden, principal nature conservation officer for the reserve, it is hoped that the animals will soon breed and that by the year 2000 the reserve, which was recently expanded to include land from the Sam Knott Nature Reserve, would be near its carrying capacity of between 90 and 120 black rhino.
