Two black rhino were immobilized in Hluhluwe and removed to Ndumu Game reserve. Ceratotherium simum One young was born to a female translocated from Umfolozi.
A calf was born to a female translocated from Umfolozi, first white rhino calf born in Transvaal since 1896.
There was some movement of white rhino from their haunts in the western area to the south. This can probably be ascribed to the vacuum left by capture in this area.
During 1964/65 111 white rhino were immobilized, and 89 were distributed as follows: Translocated to other parts of the republic - 75 Exported to swaziland - 2 Exported overseas - 12 Altogether 12 white rhino were translocated to Kruger NP during 1963 and 1964, which is their total herd. Those to overseas went to: Alberta, Canada - 1 pair Hanover, Germany - 6 USA - 1 pair Burma - 1 pair Black rhino were also succesfully immoblised and translocated.
Four Ceratotherium simum, a female and 3 males, were introduced from Umfolozi. The males arrived in January 1965 by which time conditions were already very dry. A lot of trouble was experienced with 2 of these animals as they continuously wandered out of the reserve onto neighbouring farms where they had to be recaptured. One animal was recaptured twice within 23 days. It was subsequently sent back to Umfolozi. The total white rhino population now is six, of which only two are female.
Altogether 96 rhino were translocated to the Kruger NP during 1963 and 1964. This figure represents their total herd.
