Type of Rhinoceros oswellii described by J.E. Gray (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1853, p.46). The horns were obtained by William Cotton Oswell (1818-1893) in South Africa. Donated to the NHM London by Thomas Montague Steele (1820-1890)
