This stylised Dürer print appeared in the 1723 book entitled Opera by Giuseppi d’Alessandro of Naples. It is thought that it served to compliment a last section of the book where the author discusses the earlier work of the Neapolitan author Giambattista della Porta on Physiognomy ( Fisónomia ), the comparing of animals to illustrate human characteristic, first published in 1586.
