It is reported that the small Aiyu River sanctuary is particularly well stocked with white rhino.
According to season, it is likely to be found throughout West Madi and in a great part of the West Nile district, its range extending from the Sufan border in the north to Pakwach and Panyamur in the south. In the vicinity of Rhino Camp a distinct lessening in rhino population is certainly due to a greatly increased native settlement which is encroaching heavily on the rhino areas. In contrast, in other localities considerable increases are apparent, and in some places where this animal was a rarity some years ago, there are now well-established colonies. In the Koich River area the increase is particularly noticeable, and Captain Salmon came across a cow with two calves, each about 4 months old.
Ceratotherium simum. During February and March 1939, Captain Salmon investigated the white rhino situation in the West Nile and West Madi districts. As far as numbers, there appears to be a 50 % increase since the last investigation was made 10 years ago. Captain Salmon is of the opinion that there must be at least 220 white rhinos. According to season, it is likely to be found throughout West Madi and in a great part of the West Nile district, its range extending from the Sudan border in the north to Pakwach and Panyamur in the south.
At the end of the year four white rhino were seen together near Pakwach.
In West Madi in October 1939 a white rhino was found dead as a result of a fight with one of its own kind. There were sixteen horn wounds on the body.
In the Koich River area the increase is particularly noticeable, and Captain Salmon came across a cow with two calves, each about 4 months old. His guide told him that he had first seen them when they were just able to stand up, probably within a day of birth, so that there can be no reasonable doubt that they are twins. In the Rogem area another cow was seen to be accompanied by two calves about a quarter grown, but from their behaviour it is possible that one was an orphan.
