This list contains around 8500 items. The references are presented in alphabetical order according to surnames of first authors.
The Rhino Resource Center (RRC) is an online only resource. The RRC aims to include a reference to every written document on the rhinoceros. We cover all species, both recent and fossil, within the family Rhinocerotidae. There are no restrictions to the coverage as long as the item is published in any format. Importantly, the RRC only includes items of which the editors have actually obtained or seen a copy. All entries are therefore verified from an original.
We include items of all dates, from ancient texts to modern journals. We include all languages, which is most complete for those of western countries. We include all localities around the world. We include all types of publications, from scientific treatises to popular books or stories for children, also newspapers and grey literature of unpublished reports, dissertations and theses. While all this is about the animals called rhinoceros, the references are not limited to zoology and paleontology, and also include items in a wide variety of subjects in art and culture.
From humble beginnings, in 2020 we are now close to 25,000 references. About 8,500 of these were written in the 21st century. Our listings will never be complete, and new items are found almost daily. Our editors on average add three new items every day of the year, close to a thousand annually.
All records are searchable on the RRC website using our simple search engine. This is sometimes a daunting exercise and, like most internet searches, often gives many results. Searching through the contents of the papers included in full on the RRC is best achieved through a google search or with another preferred search engine.
