James Chapman (1831-1872) saw many rhinos, both black and white, during his travels across the south of the African continent from 1851to 1863. The locations are given in Rookmaaker, 2008, Encounters with the African rhinoceros, pp. 80-85. Chapman published his Travels in 2 volumes in 1868. There was a new edition by E.C. Tabler 1971, and and the page references for this edition are provided in Rookmaaker 2008.
