John W. Melvill (1787-1852), born in London, arrived at Cape in 1799, became Governor Surveyor 1811 and government Inspector of Buildings 1815-22. He volunteered for the post of Government Resident at Griquatown 1822-1826, in 1827 became London Missionary Society missionary at Phillippolis. (Thompson 1967, I:45 note).
