Baby born 19 dec 1972 was rejected by mother, The natural mother was at first fiercely protective of the baby and fended off other members of the rhino herd who crowded around to inspect the male calf. But after several hours the mother seemed to loose interest. The vet Dr Lester Neslon was making plans for hand-rearing, when another female who had given birth on 14 Dec 1972 approached the calf and allowed it to nurse. Her own calf was raised in the animal care centre due to cold weather.
On 19 Dec 1972, third white rhino born, a male. It was rejected by mother and is now nursed and cared for by the rhino who gave birth to the second calf. The mother of the calf born on 14 Dec 1972, Sinamra, had the baby late in the day, and cold weather at the Park during the night necessitated the calf's removal to the animal care centre, where it is being raised.
