Black Rhino (bicornis)
The very severe drought of 1960-61 caused the deaths of some 300 rhinoceros in one section of the park. A biologist, John Goddard, loaned by the Canadian Government, found a large and healthy populations of between 5000 and 7000. It appears that the rhinos are not adversely affected by the large numbers of elephants.
