In 1970s, a rhino was shot by the Tangkhul Naga tribe of Khamsong village, NE of Ukhrul town.
1996 Jan. I visited the area. In Manipur, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis is occasionally reported from the Anko Range of Ukhrul District. Villagers of Konkan, about 88 km SE of Ukhrul town, encountered stray individuals as recently as early 1990s.

In the 19th century, the Sumatran rhino occurred in parts of Comilla and the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the latter two areas now in Bangladesh.

In Nagaland, there are two specific records, both from Tuensang district. In 1967-68, a rhino was reported from Saramati on the lower slopes of this 3836m peak. In 1994, the Yimchunger Nagas of the Fakim area south of Saramati reported seeing a 'dwarf' rhinoceros.
Some Nagas [from India] who occasionnally visit the Hukawng Valley in N Myanmar reported the occurrence of Dicerorhinus sumatrensis in that area also.
