D. hemitoechus was certainly a slender-limbed, two-horned rhinoceros allied to the present-day asiatic Rhinocerotinae rather than to the African Dicerotinae.

Dicerorhinus Gloger, 1841, type species R. sumatrensis 'Cuvier' = Fischer. This is an objective synonym of Didermocerus Brookes, 1828. A request has been made to ICZN to determine which name should be used.
