Earlier this year a rhino was killed by poachers in Kruger.
A tribally owned reserve situated about 40 km from provincial capital, managed by Mpumalanga Parks Board.
Aug 1997, an adult white rhino cow was found poached by a group of tourist on a game drive from Bongani Mountain lodge. Killed by AK47 bullets. Horns were taken off.
Mpumalanga parks Board is in the process of implanting tiny microchips into the horns and under the skins of the rhinos in the reserve. From these chips, information will be stored on a national computerized database. This will enable wildlife enforcement officers to identify the origin of rhino horns. The data can be read by swiping a sophisticated sensor along the length of the horn.
