1987, Five additional areas of 3883.78 ha (38.84 kmy) were made part of the reserve. It was declared as Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
1987, March - first census: 54 animals: 17/19 adults, 5/8 subadults, 5 calves.
1993, including adjacent rhino habitat outside reserve. 56 rhino: 10/21/1 adults, 1/2/2 subadult, 6 calves above 2 years, 5 of 1 year or below.
Poaching is a serious problem as the Sanctuary is surrounded by villages from all sides and the rhinos stray out of the park for foraging. 1987-1993, 18 out of 29 deaths due to poaching (4 due to electrocution) 18 % of death due to flood, 6 from illness, 2 from fighting.
Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam
The area becomes entirely flooded as water from Brahmaputra and Ualong Rivers pass through the northern and southern boundary. Rhinos go outside sanctuary in search of dry ground.
Located 50 km east of Guwahati on southern bank of Brahmaputra River, in Morigaon District, Assam. It covers about 16 kmy . The sanctuary occupies a basin-like structure surrounded by the Mayong, Kamarpur and Monoha Hills.
