Raffles said that Rhinoceros sondaicus did not occur in Sumatra. This may be doubted now that the R. sondaicus has proved to be common in Java and Tenasserim, and it appears probable, that while the latter only inhabits Java, it will be found to exist together with R. sumatrensis in Sumatra, as both of these are said to be found together with the Indian species in Tenasserim.
