Poachers wreck Meru's white rhino herd

Note
Location Kenya Subject Distribution Species White Rhino (simum)

Somali poachers have virtually destroyed the white rhino herd in Meru NP. They drove the docile, jand-reared animals across the park boundary and shot two breeding bulls and a pregnant female. That leaves five cows. It was reported that the poachers received Shs. 1800 for each horn in Nairobi. No arrests have been made. The Meru herd was introduced from South Africa in 1964 at enormous cost and effort.
