Tony Carnie reported in Natal Mercury, 6 March 1998, that Dept. of Nature Conservation shelved plans to create a high security rhino sanctuary at Opathe, largely because the rangers stop work at 4 pm. The rangers refused to conduct patrol and anti-poaching duties after hours unless they were paid standby allowances and danger pay.
