Survey August-October 1989 - Ceratotherium simum. Total sample 33. Composed of 18/9 adults, 1 female yearling, 5 juveniles (4 males, 1 unsexed). Recorded in regions A (39.4 %), B,C,D,E,F. The 1989 aerial count total of 1284 white rhino in KNP was 4,2 % higher than in 1988.

survey August-October 1989 - Diceros bicornis. One adult female, estimated 3- 3 ? yrs oldm, was seen along the northern fringes of the Crocodile River about 1 km ESE of Bume outpost (region C) on 15 Aug 1989. Black rhino recorded in the KNP during the 1989 aerial survey totalled 40, although the estimated minimum population sze is over 150.

Total sample 33, comprising 9 lone adult male, 3 bachelor groups of 2 adult male each, 1 pair of adult male and adult female, 1 pair of adult female and young female, 4 pairs of adult female with juvenile, 1 pair of adult female and juvenile accompanied by 1 adult male, 1 association of 2 adult female accompanied by 1 adult male. Mean group size in census recorded from the ground was 1.7 (range 1-3) compared with a mean group size of 2.3 from the air, and 45% of ground observations involved single individuals, all adult males. Singletons comprised 27.3% of the total number of rhinos encountered (n=33) during the ground survey, compared with 10.8% of the population recorded from the air.
