Hier stond ons een Rhinocer in de weg, en maar omtrent 100 schreden van het pad, die wy bang waren, dat het met ons in de war zoude gooyen, maar hy ging op het geschreeuw der Hottentots berg op.
Here a rhinoceros stood in our path, only aout 100 paces from the track, which we feared would throw us into disorder, but it went off uphill at the shouts of the Hottentots.

15 November 1705, Groene Kraal, probably 32 47'S, 18 48'E
komende op den avond aan een plaats, genaamd de groene Kraal, daar wy by een helder stromend riviertje, onze legerplaats formeerden; hier quam ons in de nacht een Rhinocer digt voor de tent staan, gaande de wagens rondom besnuffelen, maa kuyerde op het helder vuur stooken zagtjes voort.
Reaching in the evening a place called the groene Kraal, where we camped beside a clear flowing stream. During the night a rhinoceros came close in front of the tent, snuffling around the waggons, but on our making up the fire to a blaze it went away.
