[20] Rennell, October 1765. Assam country [starts at Gwalpara]. The woods abound with several kinds of wild animals, as Tygers, Rhinoceros, Buffalos, Elephants etc., the tracks of which may be seen everywhere.
[25] Rennell, 26 November 1766. (Surveying north of Patna)(Halted at Berealpour) Saw the Track of Rynosserus is feett.
[26] Rennell, 26 October 1767. (From Patna, along north bank of Ganges). Departed from the village Piprah (before reaching Ganduk River near Hajipur next day) Saw the Track of Tygers, wild buffaloes, and the Rynosseroces; two of the latter of which as Informed was caught last season in the said place by a Trap particularly Invented for that purpose.
[32] Rennell, January 1768. I am now in the midst of the forests of Rangamatty which are chiefly inhabited by wild Buffaloes, Elephants, Rhinoceros and Tygers; the tracks of most of these terrible animals I see every day. I never saw a just description of the Rhinoceros in any Books that I have read. It is about the size of the Elephant, and rather an overmatch for it. It feeds on Herbs, and frequently makes excursions to the Plains. [HMS. 765. 20-1-68.][HMS = Home Miscellaneous Series, India Office.]
