From April to July 1970, Dr Fred Kurt of the University of Zurich surveyed wild areas in the north of Sumatra. Total numbers are 60-100 Sumatran rhinos.

There is no certainty about the existence of the one-horned Javan rhinoceros, which used to occur in the south of Sumatra. In Gunung Leuser, Dr Fred Kurt found a footprint which appeared too large for the Sumatran species.

From April to July 1970, Dr Fred Kurt of the University of Zurich surveyed wild areas in the north of Sumatra. It is very difficult to estimate the numbers of rhinos. Kurt estimates that there are 60-100 of these animals in total, of which 28 live in Gunung Leuser.

It might be possible to establish a breeding station at Laudjohar, in Gunung Leuser NP.
