During the course of tsetse survey during 1950 up the valley of the Tangadzi River some forests were discovered containing nyala and a few black rhinoceros, the only rhino remaining in the Southern Province. The Mvabvi game reserve of 60 square miles was therefore proclaimed in 1951 to cover this area.
