Sees rhino tracks near lake Rudolph. Shoots a mature male near Lake Rudolp, near northern end, on eastern shore of Bassu, Dec 1895. The animal is much smaller than average rhino further south and horns are not long.

northern Kenya, Male shot at El Gereh, Matthews Range, 7 Sep 1895 Total length over back from tip of upper lip to root of tail, 11 feet Total length in straight line opposite side, 10 feet Total length over back from tip of upper lip to end of tail, 13 ft 4 inch Perpendicular height in straight line at shoulder, 5 ft 3 inch This was a large rhinoceros for Equatorial Africa. In Southern Africa the may possibly run larger. On Lake Rudolph they are much smaller

The rhinoceros generally run away from man as all animals. Sometimes they will charge without cause. I do not believe that they differ in disposition in different localities.

The animals were hunted for their horn (soemboe badak). While the export of these horns was important earlier, this has now almost stopped, first because the animal is only rarely met with nowadays, secondly because the population does not engage in hunting much anymore.

I do not believe that there is more than one species of black rhinoceros in Africa.

On Mt Kenia, shoots a female with a horn of 40 inches round the curve. This horn ought perhaps to be classed as R. holmwoodi, but I have a shrewd suspicion that the range of that interesting species is limited to the bazaars of Zanzibar.
