De rhinoceros uit Zuid Sumatra nu bijna verdwenen

Note
Location Sumatra Subject Distribution Species Sumatran Rhino (sumatrensis)

South Sumatra. I can only conclude that since (or through?) the hunting expeditions of Hazewinkel in 1925 the numbers of rhinos greatly reduced. From 1927 to 1933 I have much wandered aroun the forests of South Sumatra. During all that time I not only never met with a rhinoceros, but even its tracks were only shown me on few occasions. Also the forest guards, amongst whom there are good forest walkers, have never encountered the rhino and on questioning the people, the answer usually was negative or they said that formerly somewhere rhinos were found. In 1932 I helped to collect data on endangered animals and I wrote to five well-known hunters in South Sumatra. Four said that the rhino was very rare, while one did not mention the animal at all. I must concede that in the most remote parts maybe some individuals occur. We must hope that the authorities will not continue to give permits to people like Hazewinkel, who shot at least 12, to preserve the animal for our children.
