32 yrs 8 months, female in London Zoo from 1872
Rauhohrnashorn
Height at shoulder max. 150 cm
The colour varies from black to brown-red. Female in San Diego (arr. 1988) had a remarkably red colour. Male in Cincinnati (Ipoh) is black on back and sides. In Sungei Dusun Breeding Centre there is a female with remarkably black hairs. Animals in the Centre in Sabah were dark brown.
Two subspecies recognized by Ellerman & Morrison-Scott (1966): sumatrensis from Sumatra and Borneo, and lasiotis (Buckland, 1872) if SE Asian mainland. Gray (1873) named niger from Malaya, but = lasiotis. Groves (1965) named harrissoni from Borneo. Although Groves separated niger and lasiotis on the mainland, but this distinction is doubtful. In that case all those on the mainland are lasiotis and niger becomes a synonym.
