Liverpool Zoological Gardens, 1834. Arrival of rhinoceros. Liverpool Mercury Friday 27 June 1834
Zoological Gardens. - The rhinoceros has now arrived, and may be seen without any extra charge, Mr Atkins having, wisely we think, abandoned his intention of charging an additional shipping to such non-subscribers as wished to see this fair animal. It has been purchased at an immense expense, and no doubt this circumstance, together with the uncertainty of the animals living, induced Mr A. to propose the extra charge, which she has now given up. We have heard that it costs nearly £1000. It is a fine animal of the kind, about three years old, and appears to be very healthy.
