John Cockburn (1852-1902) had a short, eventful life. He mentioned twice that he had been Curator of the Allahabad Museum (Cockburn 1879, 1883:63). A note in the Times of India (1872-07-12) suggests that Cockburn’s application for Sub-Curator in Allahabad was initially unsuccessful, but possibly this decision was reversed. He then moved to Kolkata, as he listed a position of Officiating Assistant Osteologist, Indian Museum in the by-line of his 1879 paper. On 17 October 1881 he was temporarily promoted to Officiating 2nd Assistant to the Superintendent, John Anderson (Englishman's Overland Mail 1881-10-31), continuing until the start of 1883 (Indian Museum 1883:4).
