At one time a single rhinoceros of unknown species was well-known to be on the small island of Abang Besar in the Rhio Archipelago. Kloss gave me this information.

A larger, northern race is certainly distinct (lasiotis), but on the limited material I have seen I cannot divide sumatrensis as defined above.

If a Malayan form proves separable from a Sunda island race, R. blythi Gray, 1873 (Tenasserim) is available.

Rh. sumatrensis is the genotype of Dicerorhinus Gloger, 1841.
